about

Finnish artist Lhas Fawn returns, with a densely cacophonous drone poem to decay, destruction, and terrible transition, with its track titles: seedling, trunk, grove, rotten wood, and finally "Kaski" - a site that has been cleared by slash-and-burn for cultivation. Finland contains some of the most ancient wilderness in Europe and is a rare and sacred preserve amongst the most forested regions.

With instrumental, abstract compositions, emotion can be a scrying game. Amidst our deep universal crisis, it is not hard to read despair into such pealing walls of sound: lolloping percussion, crashing synths fusing with shattering cymbals, disoriented swirls of Kevin Shields-esque manipulated guitar…These may evoke the ‘seedling’ of the civilizational noise in all its contradictions; echoes from small beginnings in a harmonica-like sound to the gathering urbanization with a cathedral-like organ. Chaos seems increasingly to reign as the ‘tree’ grows and proliferates.

However, there is a purity to the natural end of a cycle, and the dissonance eventually gives way to harmonic strumming as the wood rots and signal decay advances. The finale may be a bleak purging, a mournful plea for new beginnings in the digital wreckage, or simply the life of a forest suspended.
